Golden embroidery is one of oldest methods of making handcrafts, originated in Slavonia, eastern part of Croatia. Once upon a time it was way of showing power and social class affiliation but nowadays golden embroidery shows respect towards tradition and culture. Materials for making golden embroidery were very expensive, that is why it was very appreciated and expensive. In the past it was mostly used to decorate festive clothes. Golden embroidery items are acknowledged as Croatian souvenir. Those items mostly include pictures, decorated bottles, accesories, magnets, decorative boxes for jewlery, folk costumes and similar. Golden embroidery is a technique which uses golden thread for embroidery. Lately people also use silver thread what also results with modern products.
To know how to differ original golden embroidery from other embroideries and machinery embroideries with gold thread, you should pay paticular attention on one detail – in the original golden embroidery there should not be visible gold or silver thread on the back of the canvas. Machinery embroideries have poorer quality and it can not be compared with hand craft embroidereis, especially referring to the price of product.

Nice combination of golden/silver embroidery motives on clothes turns your dress, shirt or outfit in an eye-catcher.
My sister and I practice and create golden embroidery items for about 6 years. We grown up in one little Slavonian village next to Županja city, named Gunja. Our family counted 5 sisters that all have grown up ''with needle in their hands''. We learned all techniques: crochet, knitting, embroidery. Only 6 years ago we ventured to engage in the production of golden embroidery. At the beginning it was not easy and we needed time to reach the precision that we have today. Production looks like this: it is necessary to have good frame, then you have to copy pattern on the canvas, paste a cardboard on the canvas, we tight up canvas on frame and then embriodery starts.
My sister also finished class of jewlery making in association ''Škrinjica'' in the Vinkovci city. She produces all kinds of hand made jewlery. We are also a member of association of artists ''Mansarda''. We exhibited on Eko-etno festival, Flora art festival, ''Buy Croatian'' festival, had a stand at a sanctuary of Marija Bistrica and some of our work are exhibited in some Zagrebs book and souvenir stores.
Golden embriodery is a thing that makes our day and has very important place in our lives. In one hand it demands a lot of effort, working hours, precision and patience… On the other hand it is the way we leave something recognizable and special behind us.
Time and effort invested in that work can not have price, but feeling that comes when we make some souvenir is priceless. That is why after so much years we start to work every piece with the same fire, with same expectations and with same thrill when it's done.
The biggest award to us is when we see pleasure and enthusiasm on the faces of our buyers.
That love still lasts…
Yours,
Ana and Snježana!
